Dear little Lyra,
It’s that time of year again and tomorrow you turn four (already, how?!). I love sitting down to write you these letters each year as it forces me to sit and take a moment to reflect on the past twelve months. To think about that newly turned three year old last year or even further back, to my little lobster baby. Time seems to be zooming by at the moment and you’re growing at the same speed, so it’s nice to indulge in a little nostalgia and marvel at just how amazing you are.
Amazing is probably the best word to describe you. At every age you reach I swear that that is the best stage and yet I continue to be blown away by you as you grow. To describe you in a few simple words would be impossible as, as you get older new layers and aspects of your personality are revealed. To try and scratch the surface though I would say that you are strong, curious, an adventurer. You have eyes the colour of a forest floor and hair that cannot be tamed. You can be quiet and watchful but should never be underestimated as you are also fiercely independent and eager to learn everything about the world around you.
Lyra, you continue to be the best big sister and you balance out your wild little sister perfectly. As she’s got older you two have become thick as thieves and, although you have your fall outs, you love each other fiercely and that is clear to see. You ask a constant stream of questions and are eager to learn how everything works which is mostly amazing (although sometimes exhausting). You create the most elaborate games, your imaginative play goes on for hours and you’ve even started ‘writing’ your own stories. Your imagination is beautiful.
Today, on your last day as a three year old we learned what school you will be starting at in September! So many big things going on in your life and yet you take it all in your stride. Your resilience astounds me and I hope that you always keep it. I also wish that I could have an ounce of your quiet strength, my girl. You’re still happiest outdoors and I’m excited to open up the natural world more to you this year as your sister is now old enough to keep up. I’m picturing hikes and camping, picnics and campfires, and I just know that you will love every second of it. I’m so excited for this next twelve months, I have a feeling they’re going to be the best ones yet.
Lyra Jo, know that you are loved,
Very Much So xx
