I am such a sucker for a photo project. Last year I pretty much completed a photo a day challenge (I missed a couple of days in December) and I also take a portrait of each of my daughters every week. When I was pregnant with my second child I knew that I would want to take some special photos to document their relationship from day one. Once Athena was born my days passed in a blur of nappy changes, everlasting nursing sessions and lack of sleep. All these plans for perfectly styled sibling photos went out of the window.
I have to be honest here and say that I was more than a little upset. Ridiculous I know, but every moment seems so special and precious and I worried that I might forget how these girls of mine got to know and love each other. But I needn’t have worried. Almost from day one Lyra has come into our room and requested to be lifted into her sister’s cot. We’ve always obliged and I’ve often snapped a little photo. They’re never styled, the girls are often in pyjamas or mismatched clothes and the cot will be full of whatever toys Lyra decides to bring with her but these photos are theirs. It shows their relationship from the very beginning, it shows how they’ve each grown individually and it shows just how much they love each other. I don’t direct them or try and get them to look at the camera (although they often look up whilst probably thinking about how crazy their Mama is), I just snap away whilst they interact with each other.
These photos are hands down my favourite photo series ever. Better than any I could have planned. And that’s just the way sometimes isn’t it. Reality is often so different to the daydream but sometimes, if we’re lucky, those ordinary everyday moments beat any that we’ve planned over and over in our heads. I’m not sure how much longer both girls will fit in this cot at the same time, it’s getting quite a squeeze now, but I do know that I will treasure these photos forever.
