One of my favourite thing about having children is introducing them to the world around them and watching them experience things for the first time. It’s easy to get distracted by all of the big firsts; smile, steps, words, that you forget all of those little everyday ones. A few weeks ago we got to watch one of those and it was unexpected and wonderful. Whilst out and about on a usual weekend walk we introduced Lyra to blackberry picking for the first time.
Now, I have to be honest here, blackberry picking is not really my idea of fun especially since you seem to have to pick lots in order to do anything with them. Stupidly though I had overlooked the obvious. We could just pick a few to eat as we walk! Now, I know that seems glaringly obvious but my youngest is in the middle of a sleep regression so I’m going to blame my limited mental capacity on that. We didn’t set out looking for blackberries, we were actually on a leaf hunting mission, but when we stumbled across some we just couldn’t resist. Lyra watched on dubiously as Matt leaned into the brambles to pick a blackberry for her but once she saw him eat one there was no stopping her. Her delight in trying something new never fails to make me smile. We then explained to her which ones she could eat whilst also trying to impress on her that we can’t just eat anything we find on a walk, and then she was off hunting for her own.
Matt will be filming short videos here and there to accompany this ‘Something for the Weekend‘ series and I’m so glad that he filmed Lyra’s first blackberry picking experience. Just a short video but a wonderful memory.
Blackberry picking season in this country is typically late August and the whole month of September so what are you waiting for?! This may be your last chance to find some for the year so if you do head out in search of blackberries this weekend please tag me on Instagram or Twitter or use the hashtag #vmsweekend and let me know what else we can go foraging for at this time of year as I’d love to learn.
