Sometimes, I struggle. Sometimes, Lyra does nothing but whine and grumble all day long. She moves from one thing to the next just destroying everything in her path. Sometimes, I feel like all I do all day long is follow her around telling her no and picking up after her. I found myself getting short. Snapping at her when she doesn’t really deserve it. She’s teething at the moment so her attention span is shorter than usual and her temper is even shorter than that. Sometimes we’re just angry at each other. Sometimes, we just have to get outside.
When I find myself getting too frustrated with Lyra I know that it’s time to get out of the house. As soon as I start putting my shoes on Lyra looks up, gets excited and runs off to find her own shoes. The atmosphere in the house immediately changes and a feeling of anticipation settles. Sometimes I grab my camera and some snacks but other times we just take ourselves. No need for anything else but our sense of adventure. We never walk far, we’re lucky enough that there is a park just behind our house and several nice walks close by, but it feels like we’re a million miles away. Watching Lyra explore brings me the greatest joy and any stress of the day just melts away.
Sometimes, we’re explorers. We examine the flowers growing amongst the grass. We spot hot air balloons in the sky above us. Sometimes, we’re adventurers. We conquer a hill together or run across a bridge. Sometimes, all we need is to sit in a field and feel the sun on our faces and the grass amongst our fingers.
