The concentration in her face as she tries to keep hold of the crayon. The excitement as she makes a mark on the page. The determination as she tries to make more. I just want to soak it all up.
Whilst pregnant I think that everybody daydreams about certain things that they’re looking forward to with their future child. Different experiences spring to mind for different people. I always daydreamed about long walks, crafts and baking with my children. Now, we’ve been on plenty of walks as a family and I think Lyra is still a little small for baking (although it’s on my to do list) but crafts are something we can do. We’ve played with paints together but up until this point i think it’s been more about the texture than anything else for Lyra.
This week though something has changed. For the first time Lyra put crayon to paper and enjoyed making marks. To say I was proud would be an understatement (crazy how kids can make you excited about anything). It was amazing to watch her trying to figure it out and experimenting. I could have sat and watched her all day.
Of course, it was just squiggles on a page but it really feels like the beginning of something. I can’t help but get excited at the thought of all of the pictures she’ll draw, the glimpse into her imagination that they’ll give me. For now though I’ll just share in her joy as she discovers the ability to make marks on paper.
